POSITIVE DAILY HABITS

FOR A HEALTHY MINDSET

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."

- Albert Einstein

If you're trying, working, or committed to building a life you love, your mindset needs to be your #1 priority. Everything you do flows out of it. The decisions you make, how you spend your time, and both the goals you set and their success depend on it.

You know those people who just seem to have it figured out from kindergarten? They've got the built in work ethic, the dream, the determination, and they make sh** happen.

I am not one of those people. I have not had a healthy mindset built in, discipline doesn't come naturally to me, and I hated goal setting for a really, really long time. I'm a dreamer, but the follow through isn't my favourite. I've had to work to develop a healthy mindset. To build a healthy lifestyle, one that can support the kind of life I want to live, not the one I've been living.

With that in mind, I've worked really hard to build in habits and rhythms that support this journey. There is not switch to flip, no one-size-fits-all that will work for this, but these practices are positive daily habits that will transform everything for you.

Positive Daily Habits for a Healthy Mindset

1. don't lay in bed after your alarm

I am so guilty of this, but it's literally the #1 most destructive habit I've ever had.

Set your alarm for when you want to get up, and when it goes off, get out of bed. It's so easy to waste an insane amount of time scrolling social media, replying to messages, or even getting lost in the news.

Feeling rushed first thing in the morning is a terrible way to begin your day, but when you hop up right away and get your body moving, even if your brain's not quite there, it'll give you some momentum and help you start out on a strong note. Also... if we're being honest, social media typically isn't great for putting you in a healthy mindset. So putting it in your mind before all else is probably not a great plan.

2. do something productive right away

Next up, make an effort to do something productive right away in the day. This can be making your bed, packing your lunch, or giving your house a quick tidy. It doesn't need to be big, but the sense of accomplishment it gives you is basically an espresso shot in your veins.

You'll notice that many of these positive daily habits pertain to the morning, because it really does set the tone for the rest of your day. The way that you choose to begin has a big impact on how it'll play out and end.

3. eat breakfast

Eat a REAL BREAKFAST. That whole "most important meal of the day" thing is legit. Eating a whole, healthy breakfast gives you an energetic and productive start to the day, but hunger can mess with your head, mood, and mindset in some HUGE ways.

A healthy perspective is best achieved alongside a healthy body, so do NOT neglect this. If you're usually rushed in the morning, try making overnight oats or prep something else the night before that you can just grab & go!

4. get outside

I've personally seen the effect that getting outside everyday can have on your life, and I can't recommend it enough. Research has proven that just 20 minutes outside in decent weather can DRASTICALLY improve your mood.

Getting fresh air and sunshine is so refreshing. It gives you time to process, think,  and just exist free of distractions. Additionally, exercise is extremely beneficial to a healthy mindset, so combining these two to go for a walk, run, or move your body in some other way is a complete game changer.

5. spend time around other people

We need each other. Introvert or extrovert, humans crave connection and community. Your friends and loved ones affect your wellbeing, and spending time with them is important for your happiness.

Keep in mind, who you choose to be close to matters. There's a principle supported by research that you are the sum of the 3-5 people you spend the most time with. They affect your thoughts, work ethic, choices, desires, etc. You will become like the people around you. What kind of person do you want to become?

This last year has made it hard to see people we love, but don't stop finding creative ways to connect. You need your people, and they need you.

6. do some reading

My New Years Resolution this year was to read a book a week. Ha. That has not happened, but on the upside, I have been reading more. And man, it feels so good. Getting back into reading after graduation has been a slow process, but reading for me has always been something that I've loved and been deeply passionate about.

Reading is a great way to take a break, relax, or end off your day. I love Netflix as much as the next girl (currently hooked on New Amsterdam), but reading is how I grow more than anything else.

7. track your goals

I'm a BIG advocate for goal setting, and a firm believer that goal setting and habit building is the fastest way to change your life. Tracking your goals allows you to see and celebrate your progress, stay motivated to keep going, and achieve whatever you set your mind to.

It helps you keep going when you get discouraged, and gives you a sense of accomplishment every single day.
